FWIW, I've used V-brake pads on a couple of bike with center pull brakes. 
They are much long and have more surface area than the original block style 
pads. The braking is very good with them. I did switch the spacers on the 
brake pad posts, the spacer next to the pad is used on the outside and the 
outside spacer is used next to the pad.
