For short, try "Veronica" by Nicholas Christopher. If you like it, try his "A Trip to the Stars". One of my all time Favorites is "Wonder Boys" by Michael Chabon, then anything else by him. Have been reading aloud a lot with my wife; all these are books that we have read recently. We couldn't get through " Confederacy of Dunces", go figure. A very enjoyable nonfiction that we are just finishing is "Driving Mr. Albert" by Michael Paterniti, about a trip with the guy who "stole" Einstein's brain. Very interesting, well written and entertaining. Also try any of the mysteries by Bill Pronzini. Most are short, lots of Bay Area and California settings. Enjoy!
