Might be the angle – I know that I'm more willing to accept tight tolerances than many, and my comment was intended to take others' desires for more generous clearance into account. But it's true that I think tight clearances ought to be more acceptable in the absence of fenders, and their tendency to scoop up potential jammer-sticks, etc.
