I'm very curious how you manage to get 2 children to school and to
extra-curricular events sans auto. I know Kent Peterson (of blog and Great
Divide and long distance fixed gear riding) did so.

I drive between 4 and 5k miles a year, of which less than 1 K is for
myself, when I need to load up at Costco or take wheels or frame or bike to
the bike shop, or haul things from Home Depot. The rest is moving my
14-year-old daughter to and from her mother's house and to and from
skating, tennis, parties, get togethers, shopping. Add another 1 K in a
rental when I take her to camp outside of Colorado Springs each year -- I
live in ABQ, NM.

ABQ of course is a typical SW city: fewer than 550K inhabitants in the
limits, but spread out over many miles. And Catie's mother delights in
scheduling events for her diagonally across town. There is no way I could
use public transportation, although, for a SW city, ABQ's is pretty good --
I think our car/car-less situation is far better than that of Phoenix, for
example.

Note that my car ('06 PT Cruiser with back seats removed) costs me in total
roughly $150/month including long-term repair bills, assuming that the car
will last another 10 years at 5K/year, or that I can sell it before hand
for a few K. (Actually, my daughter recently asked me, "Dad, can I have
your car when I turn 15?" She knows how little I drive it for myself. I may
just give it to her.)

So, how do you get your children around and about?
