Thanks everyone for all the ideas. I went down to our local hardware store today, not quite sure just what I was going to decide upon. Found a nylock nut to keep the whole shebang from falling apart again. Good. They also had aluminum tubing in a good size, but no leather washers/grommets. I did find some rubber grommets and that's what most appealed to me. How long will they last? I'll get back to you in a few months, or years, or decade or so when/if they fail. If I can get a decent pic of the finished project, I'll post it.
I'm still drawn to the cork solution, just out of standard Riv-like whimsy, but I'll go for the rubber grommets for now.
