I have done these swaps lots of times sometimes changing out the freehub
body as well. I recently changed out an old MTB wheel with m737 XT 8spd 135
hub to a 7spd 130 hub for use on my '93 XO-3 which unfortunately has road
spacing (128mm) on a 26" wheel. Someday I should get the frame re-spaced,
but I have been saying that for a decade. I have generally take old 135
hubs and converted them to 130 or 132.5, but have also gone the other
direction. I have done this on STX, LX, 105, Ultegra and XT hubs from the
early to mid 90s. More modern hubs with cone shaped rubber seals are easy
to go bigger but harder to go smaller, but not impossible. Swapping from a
130 to a 135 is not much harder that re-greasing all the bearings, but you
should redish the wheel afterwards.

The most modern XT hubs with aluminum ends and without the typical threaded
axles and the threaded locknut, cone combo might be impossible, I'm not
sure.

Instead of harvesting the axle from your STX, you might just want to buy a
longer axle (146mm is the correct size) from wheels manufacturing and a 5mm
spacer at your local bike shop. Contact me if you need any help.
