Yes, I can confirm this.  I use the XT RD-M772 with BS79 10-speed indexed
bar-end shifters.  It works great. Shimano 7-10 speed road and 7-9 speed
MTB all use the SIS cable pull standard, so they're interchangeable and the
indexing is controlled by the shifter.

As others have discovered, Dyna-sys RDs may work fine with friction
shifters, but not with non-Dyna-sys index shifters.

I have used the M772 with a 34t big cog, without problems.  Currently my
Riv has a 52/42/30 crank, so the 11-32 cassette is low enough for me.
