A great article in New York <http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/03/bike-wars-are-over-and-the-bikes-won.html#>today on the opposition to bike lanes during the Bloomberg administration.
Turns out much of the opposition was a load of hooey. Some, even more than hooey: one of the tabloid actually suggested a bike lane in front of the Israeli Consulate enhanced the risk of terrorism. As if there were more bicycle riding fiends than car bombers. Fortunately wiser heads prevailed.
