Interesting, Jeff. I just made the switch from Barlow Pass (great tires, 
BTW) to 45mm Smart Sams (no fenders). 

If my back rim, my rack, rear brakes and the planets are in perfect 
alignment, I can squeeze them in without any rubbing - barely. My first 
ride was this past weekend on an incredibly gnarly but equally beautiful 
hill near my house. It was amazing. 

Was it the just the fear of misalignment or an actual misalignment that 
caused you to switch? 

My current thought is that I'll pack a smaller diameter folding tire in my 
bag for extended trips, just in case.
