I can't get 1st gear to work on the hub. I can get 3d and 2nd to click into place, but when I get the cable tight enough for 1st to click, when I release the lever, the cable tension pulls the lever down away from the "click position", loosening the cable and allowing the gear to skip.
Is this slop in the lever, or is this wear in the hub? The seller said that he refurbished the hub shortly before selling. Also, am I somehow stressing the shift lever by installing it on a clamp-on bracket on the seatstay or, as now, on the seat tube? IOW, might I be somehow stressing the system by not using the housing, housing stop, and roller wheel, and instead running it directly from shifter to pull chain? I've tried the SA instructions to no avail. I know that you, Philip, have your shifter bolted to a seatstay boss, so your situation ought to be much the same as mine. Do you get this same lever slop in the gear 1 position? Note that when I remove the cable, and shift the lever with no tension at all, all 3 positions appear to click loudly and firmly -- but again, when installed with the cable, 1st gear tension pulls the lever away from the click position.
