I am not talking about any specific club here.

Some things I still don't get are:

1. One is not allowed to have a non-rando friend tag along on a permanent, because they don't want you getting assistance or drafting your friend. But you can get assistance and draft from a a randonneur on the permanent.

Not quite: "*Article 2. *RUSA Permanents may be ridden only by current RUSA members." Period. There is no "because" clause. And, to paraphrase Article 1, "It is our ball."

2. One cannot go through stop signs and lights or you will be DQ'ed from the ride, but some of them openly, in public, in written form, mention their going through stops signs and red lights. Aren't they afraid to get disqualified?

I'm afraid you will have to ask them. Among other things, Article 5 says "The rider must ride in accordance with all applicable traffic codes, obey all traffic signals, and use bike paths when required by law." But it does not say anywhere "or you will be DQ'd from the ride."

3. Randonneurs cannot get outside help during the ride. But they allow someone to bring them a drop bag. Isn't that outside help?

Drop bags are a form of personal support, and Article 6 says *"*Personal support is*only allowed at checkpoints." *So, you are missing a nuance, and your view of the prohibition is incorrect.

Another view is, randonneuring is long rides with bureaucracy, and specifically French bureaucracy. Or, you could just as well say, "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." ;-)
