I hung several bikes vertically in my garage, using similar J-hooks. They work, but I can see why other hooks are better-designed for vertical mounting. These simple J-hooks rotate easily, which means I often have to re-adjust them before hanging a bike. These simple J-hooks work great for hanging a bike upside down from the rafters, but they're not ideal for hanging a bike vertically (but they do work).
Whereas, a hook mounted on a plate that can't rotate works even better for hanging a bike vertically on the wall. Here's one for less than $5. <https://www.atgstores.com/bike-racks/racor-piw-1r-bike-hanger_7368726.html?ppc=2615&af=2615&cm_mmc=sce_google&s_kwcid=AL!4500!3!100651019092!!!g!84452793530!&gclid=CJ_-vtH2qNACFZA2aQodGbgJCw&ef_id=VF0ehgAABM0O1n1r:20161114185743:s> When the J-hooks I used start to strip their holes in the studs, I'll probably replace them with similar plate-mounted hooks. The rear wall of my garage is semi-finished (bare sheetrock), so I put a strip of adhesive vinyl tape down the wall where the bike tires make contact.
