For commuting, I've heard lots of good reviews for the Schwalbe Marathon
Winter. They're available in 700 x 50 (29 x 2") and 700 x 42. The studs
are on the sides of the tread, so they don't drag as much in normal
riding--but they can help in icy ruts. Peter White has them, or get them
from Europe for cheap.

They're heavy and slow, but that's true of all studded tires.

Most of the other wide studded tires (Nokian Suomi, 45Nrth, etc) have
aggressive tread for MTB use, which is overkill and added drag for
commuting.
