I had a similar experience applying decals (unsuccessfully) on a
bombadil frame. Especially the seat-tube decal, which I effed up
twice. I finally got it successfully after talking to Jay about
it.

Also, I was having trouble lining up the decal with much confidence,
because when the top-sheet is still on the decal, you can't see the
actual decal very well. So what I did was to measure the decal
(image) cross-wise, and mark a center-line on the top-sheet with a pen
before peeling away the backing and aligning the decal for final
commitment/adhesion. It definitely helped a bit.
