So, yesterday I was biking over to Subaru to check out the new storm chaser cars. (North Texas experienced some hail damage last Friday.)
I was waiting on the sidewalk at a light to cross an intersection, when a pickup with heavily tinted windows rolled up next to me. As I looked at it, the passenger window started to roll down. Various images flashed through my head. I was too far away for a tobacco chewing Texan to spit on me, and heavy winds were facing my direction of travel, so I felt safe from cigarette butts and trash. Once the window was all the way down, I heard an exclamation of surprise "Wow, that's a really cool bike, what is the frame?" Looking closer, I saw a guy driving the truck, and next to him in the passenger seat was a young woman. I replied "a Joe Appaloosa." I was riding my new steed, a blue Appaloosa with dual top tube. The driver looked to the crew cab behind him and repeated what I said. And then I said "it is made by Rivendell Bike Works." And he repeated the same to the back. (I was thinking that it was getting a little comical.) Then he asked "what year?" And I replied "a 2016. I just got it." I'd recently had the parts moved over from an Atlantis by a local bike shop, and everything was gleaming beautifully. The driver began to really wax enthusiastic about the bike. He was psyched. The young woman sitting next to him wasn't nearly as enthusiastic. She almost seemed to want to hide. Finally space opened in the traffic and the pickup passed in front of me, the driver gave me a thumbs up. I couldn't help but smile. I have a feeling that Rivendell will be hearing from a North Texan this week. When I got to Subaru, all but four cars on the showroom floor had been smashed.
