I've sold all my Rivendell's excluding my wife's Betty Foy, and that may
hit the block too. I'll comment on my reason's for selling which has
nothing to do with anyone else's experience with owning then selling their
Rivendell's. My first Riv was an A.H.H and that was the last to go because
it was a truly great all around bike but I sold it because I feel I can
have a better custom built all rounder for near the same price with all the
features Riv excludes, dyno wiring, clearance for fatter tires (fatter with
all these other features), disc brakes, threadless headset (no shimmy) geo
for my specific dimensions and custom racks built at the same time. I sold
my Atlantis to fund a custom adventure bike. Basically, my Bantam is what I
had hoped the Atlantis would be but could never be.

Let me be clear, I love the Rivendell ethos and the aesthetic they offer,
come on how can you not love the look of lugs and I still think the quill
nitto stem is art work. I look at it this way, I drove a 1995 Mazda Miata
for a decade and I loved most every time I drove it, yet when it developed
issues I just didn't want to deal with I sold it and bought a new Honda
Civic. It drives better, sips gas and costs less to operate. It's a better
vehicle plain and simple. I see some of the new bicycle innovations as just
providing a better experience, that's not to say that a road bike needs
disc brakes or electronic shifting it doesn't. But for the kinda riding I
want to do these days these features matter.

At the end of the day I think we owe Grant a big thank you for pushing the
envelope both backwards and forwards. Personally, I think his greatest
contribution is the just ride ethos, that notion is what made riding a bike
for me a joy. Like most things in life I don't agree with everything Grant
dispenses but who agrees with everyone all the time? I know I'll have
another Riv someday which one right now is the mystery? If I were to take a
stab guessing, it would be the A. Homer of course.

Cheers,

~hugh
