I think the Hillborne is the ideal Rivendell rando frame.

I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that anybody would want or
expect out of a randonneuse that the Hillborne does not deliver. Some
people like to do brevets on ultra light carbon road bikes, and perhaps
those people would gripe that a light Hillborne build is like 23 lbs
instead of 17, but that's definitely not me. For a long distance road
bike, 622x38s are ideal. Wider than that on 622 rims is cool for bumpabout
riding, or dirt, but not paved brevets. Narrower doesn't get you anything,
either, so a bike with clearance for 622x38s plus fenders is perfect, for
me.

You want something reliable, comfortable, stable, and efficient. The
Hillborne is all those things. You want attachment points for necessary
rack and fenders. Having something that is well made and beautiful to look
at is a bonus. If we were to take up a collection and rounded up $3500,
and you all insisted that I buy a custom Rivendell identical to my
Hillborne but a pound and a half lighter, I'd happily do it, but $3500 to
save the weight of half a bottle of water is a dear price. That pound and
a half would save me, what, a minute or two per 100 miles?
