"the financial lives of the poets" - Jess Walter (one of the best
young american writers going)

"the believers" - zoe heller.  fantastic.

"nine stories" - salinger, about my 20th re-read at this point.  "a
perfect day for bananafish" is one the best short stories ever written
in my opinion.

"the humbling" - philip roth.  not his most impressive work, but he's
such a good writer that it doesn't really matter.

"interpreter of maladies" - jhumpa lahiri, another re-reading because
it's so damn good.

essays by mark twain for when i need a laugh.

selections from "a confederacy of dunces" for when i need a really
good laugh.
