RR42 page 19, Grant writes of the Safety Swerve: a bit of a wiggle as
cars are approaching from behind. I have a refinement of this. I
monitor approaching car behavior in my helmet mirror. If they are
beginning a shift to the left to give me space, no action needed. If
they are holding their line that will pass very close to me, or if we
are both approaching a dangerous portion of the road, say the topping
of a hill or a narrowing portion of the road, I do my Saddlebag
Jostle. I simply stand, but hold my body vertical and let the bike
swing side to side. The wagging saddlebag nearly always earns me a bit
of road space.

After decades of not using a mirror because they were too dorky, my
riding has been transformed by my mirror. Being able to monitor
approaching traffic gives me some forecast of impending passes and has
diminished the scary surprises coming up from behind.

Also, back to the article on page 19, I would never spit towards a
car. I understand what Grant meant, but if you miss-time your spit
just a bit, it is a big insult and potentially a big confrontation.
