Thanks. Verticals IMO are the ones to have for derailleur systems; I've
toyed with the idea of a IGH tourer, but perhaps that Rivendell ride trumps
drivetrain particularity. A wide range double (basically a, say, 1X9 with
bailout granny, the last operated by finger) might be the way to go -- after
so many years riding fixed and ss I have a horror (a horror, I say!) of all
that damned shifter and cable clutter that derailler systems, front
derailleurs in particular, require -- does anyone have a "suicide shifter"
to sell? Wonder if I could make one .... (I read a story of two British
brothers who toured the world on custom name brand tourers back in the 80s,
who shifted their rings with a piece of wire bent into a hook. Sounds good
to me.)

Doesn't someone make a X -- 36 cassette nowadays? So, say a 42 main ring
would give me a low of about 32"; a 46 a low of 35 -- low enough for most
uses, with a 26 to get me up steep hills with load.

Now does the Hillborne have front rack braze ons? I think not ... How does
it handle with say 15 lb in front in a bar bag, assuming the greater load in
back?
