Lovely review. In reply to your closing thoughts, I think that ~$4k for 
such a versatile bike is a bargain. I'd rather have a good all-rounder than 
a stable of specialty bikes.

One of the things I love about bicycles is that you can buy something 
exceptional for the price of a beater car. If you amortize the cost over 
the decades of reliable service you can expect from a Riv it's an 
astounding value.
