Have a plan (and tell someone), bring enough water and food, start with shorter/easier hikes, check the weather, and have fun. I’ve sold hiking/ climbing gear for 10 years and it is amazing how complicated you can make something that can be as uncomplicated as walking in the woods. If you enjoy it you will learn about it organically.
I would recommend having a comfortable dedicated backpack and putting a first aid kit and some emergency food (I use high quality single serve dog food samples— then I DEFINITELY won’t eat it unless it’s an actual emergency).
