They used to have a lightbox plug-in (click on a thumbnail and a bigger 
images pop up within the same browser window) on one of the previous 
iterations of the site.

Looks like they traded that functionality for the ability to zoom in on the 
details of the pic at 100% of the image size.

This wouldn't be possible otherwise unless the image opened up full-size in 
the same or another browser window, which of course gets the visitor off 
the "Buy Now" page.

Using e-commerce sites like Shopify always involves a lot of compromise 
when you are dealing with all options across all devices.
