I just did my usual eyeball method. Put the chain in a couple different gears and see what it looks like. Had a funny moment when I first put the chain on. I hadn't worked with 10 speed before and when the chain was 8 inches too short I looked at the package and it said 10s and I thought it was a short chain. So I called my shop and they noted the link number and said it was the longest chain available.
