One of the most engaging histories I've read in the last 10 years is "The Empire of the Steppes: A History of Central Asia", by Rene Grousset, featuring the fearsome trio of Atilla, the aforementioned Mr. Khan, and Tamberlain. What a story, and well-told. In fact, there's a trio of Hill Bike models: Attilla Attacker, Genghiz Gravel Grinder, and Tamberlain Terrain Tamer. Go Team!
