Welcome, Owen! It’s exciting and full of over-thinking to puzzle out a bike
build, ain’t it? Grin. One of the gifts of this group is the expertice in
various details, but in the end, we each have to figure out what works for us
when the rubber meets the road, the hands the bars, the feet the pedals, the
rear the saddle. Grin.

You’d said: “Also at 5'11" any idea on which stem riser height I should be
looking at?” Rivendell uses threaded 1” (? Confirm that, I may have the detail
wrong? 1.25”?) headsets, so if your question presumes the threadless headsets
you see on most bike, these are different. The height is very adjustable on Riv
stems in a wide range. The stem decisions you’ll have are: 1) road brake levers
(26mm stem) or mountain brake levers (25.?mm diameter stem)? (your bar will
determine this); stem length (if you go 52 Clem, longer stem length most
likely, shorter for the large).

I understand the budget constraint, but if you can, wherever your body meets
the bike, quality matters. Rivendell is great at offering good value parts for
these, including pedals, but it’s worth spending more on bar and saddle once
you have an idea what works for you.

Enjoy the delecious torment of thinking about a bike you don’t yet have! We’ve
all been there, and some of us are always there! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
