Joe's observation of crisp front shifting is bang on. I have found another
benefit of a compact double (converted triple) is being able to run a short
cage rear derailleur, which feels better to me than a long cage in this
application. My 130bcd Sugino GP now sports an outer chainguard and 45/30 in
front with a nine speed 12-27 cassette, paired with Suntour barends. I'm very
pleased with the shifting with this set-up.

"The Q is the same, you're just replacing the big ring with a chainguard. The
main benefit of a Wide-Low double is you can set the fd stops to cover just the
two rings, making friction front shifting almost index-like: "
