It is our windy season (but we don't have winds like Deacon's winds) and I
had to ride to the Corrales main post office because the closer branch one
was closed for lunch. And because the wind was from the North at steady
20-something with gusts to mid-30s, I had to detour a couple of miles
instead of riding NNE along the too-narrow main Corrales road. So, almost
10 miles outbound of which 7 were either north or NW.
I debated moving the chain to the 19 t cog, but decided to give the 17 a
try (17/19 Dingle, 22 fw on flip side; 70/63/54 gi) and found it not too
bad, except during the worst gusts (had to stand a few times on the flat)
as long as I hunkered down in the hooks and took it easy. 11.47 mph average
outbound, clock running.
I did take Corrales Road homeward, south, and could have used a gear well
into the 80s.
17.25 miles total and entirely enjoyable! So much does depend on attitude!
It took me years to learn not to fight wind. I guess I've learned.
While at Sprout's, the old lady in front of me inquired about the Rivendell
and admired the VO "hammered" fenders. I've found that there seem to be 2
kinds of old ladies in grocery stores: Nice old ladies, who are polite even
if they look askance at the more aggressively styled riding sunglasses* (as
well they might; sly, offensive things; I wear them only to protect my
eyes)' and the nasty sort who try to cut in front of you; to one of whom my
brother, youthful then, and long ago, said: "You may be old, but that
doesn't give you the right to be nasty."
