I've found that there's also variation in the honey color of the
saddle itself. Just recently I tried orange cloth tape underneath with
6 coats of Bullseye amber and the final tone was very close to a
darker honey seat that I have.  I've used both amber Bullseye and Velo
flakes on yellow cloth tape and synthetic cork tape and they are a
good match for lighter seats.  I agree on the 5-6 coats.   Also, amber
over kelly green is a good match for the british green brooks.

Also, for twining, waxed irish linen in 3-ply or 5-ply comes in many
colors and takes the shellack well.
