Back when travelling a bit, I ended up in Glasgow Scotland for a while, and got a wonderful "local's only" tour with some art students I'd met on the train. As they were studying at the Glasgow School of Art, they made sure to educate me about local boy Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We went to all the buildings, sneaking about when necessary, and one of the little factoids that stayed with me over the (mumble-mumble) years was that for his Willow tea-room, he specified design all the way down to the silverware. Maybe it was compulsive, but the result was a vision which permeated every aspect of the design. Of course, we're dealing with bicycle designs, but the little discoveries, quirks and personalities that present themselves through GP's work is one of the things I really love about it. If the bicycles didn't ride so well, adapt so briliantly and perform so reliably, none of the details would be more than window dressing. But, they do all that, and the little touches just make it that much better. In a Reader a while back, Grant wrote about a single Campy part, (brake lever?) that had one bit which would never see the light of day, yet had been polished out during the fabrication. Care of craftsmanship. (Yeah, cheaper labor, too... but still, someone had to care enough to decide to do that.) The typography choices, the graphics, the little lines of text, the assymetrical sweep of the lugs, the arcing of the chevrons on the fork crowns... mmmmm... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rennie_Mackintosh > The single top tube looks much nicer. Hey, the H doesn't even match > that frame! On the single top model, the one top tube is represented by the gap between the horizontals.
