A couple of notes here...

When you install new tires check the tire pressure. You might be surprised are 
how much difference that makes. The added weight of the pipe could be giving 
you the same effect that lower tire pressure. 

Also I just want to point out that it is a very respectably weird thing to see 
a big pipe and decide to strap it to your bike. :)  Did I miss something in 
your original post? What was the logic sequence there?
