I must have close to 3" of toe overlap with my Matthews dirt road bike and 80 mm fenders; it's a tradeoff I accept, but I would not choose this bike for technical singletrack.
Reaction to toe overlap is a very personal thing. Jan dislikes it, Grant doesn't mind it. I've commuted across town in busy traffic on fixed gears (no adjusting cranks for corners) with fenders and toe overlap for years without much difficulty; like not leaning hard in corners on a fixed gear, you learn to compensate for it. However, on my new-to-me old Monocog, with 30 1/2" wheels, the absence of toe overlap is very nice to have.
