Graham,
I live in Pittsburgh, PA and if your travels take you anywhere near...say 
somewhere between CLE and IAD, I'd bring you my 60 Sam to ride.  I also 
have a MUSA 62 Atlantis that's set up as a tourer if you'd like to try it. 
 I use the Sam very much like you plan to do and love the ride.  I've even 
had racks on it and used it for weeklong touring (before Atlantis), and it 
held up fine even if a little out of its wheelhouse.
