I hang my bikes vertically in my basement. My fendered bikes hang from their back wheels so the rear fender doesn't get crunched. They are definitely harder to hang that way. However, if you use a toe strap or Irish strap or similar to tie the back of the front wheel to the downtube, you might find it's easier. I stand at the left side of the bike, left hand on left fork, right hand at the bottom of the seat tube, squat down and lift with your legs, keeping your right arm in tight to keep the bike in close to your body.
