I just got some 35-622 Paselas and put them on my Fisher Sphinx monster cross, hoping they would be wider than the Jack Browns on my Sam. The short answer: about 1.5 to 2mm wider, though they may stretch a bit. Measuring the width at several points, however, I noticed that the measurement varied as much as 1mm, but was repeatable at any given point around the tire.
In the places where the measurements were smaller, I noticed that the slight ridge on the tire near the bead (that presumably is there to let you gauge whether the bead is seated equally all around the tire) was partly buried under the rim, despite the fact that I pinched the tires near the rim when partially inflated to help seat the bead. I deflated the tire partially and expended a lot of effort trying to get the ridge on the side wall to be equidistant from the rim all the way around, but was only partly successful. I actually did this twice, but the width measurements still vary by about 1mm between the max. and min. measurements. I then checked the Jack Browns on my Sam, and found the same variability. Since the only pumps I have here are mini pumps, I elected not to deflate the JBs as well. :) I now wonder if this is a bead seating issue, or whether it's just normal variation in tire width. I thought of pumping up the tires to max pressure to see if that would allow the beads to seat fully, but elected to wait until I have access to a floor pump. Also, the JBs have been on the Sam for months, and I would think that the bead would seat eventually? Has anyone noticed similar variability in tire width? Here are the actual numbers: tire actual width (mm) on rim Pasela (non-TG) 34.6-35.4 Velocity Synergy OC Pasela (non-TG) 33.0-34.0 Mavic Open 4 CD Jack Brown (green) 33.0-34.0 Velocity Synergy OC Jack Brown (green) 32.6-33.5 Velocity Synergy Actual weights of the Paselas were 470g and 495g. They are from 2 different batches, although both were just purchased from Harris Cyclery: One has a gaudier, bigger logo, and a lot of rubber stubble from the injection ports, while the other one has virtually none.
