I think that the main liability with the thinner sidewalls of the
extralight models
is to sharp rocks that can tear them; as for the tread, I’ve ridden 42 mm
and even 28 mm (actual) extralights on firm gravel with no problem (and of
course on sandy surfaces but with their share of cottonwood roots and ruts).
