Ryan

I had been ramping up my running, with the target of running my first ever
marathon in August 2025 and racing in a trail Duathlon in October. I was
running the Cinderella trail half-marathon earlier this month in Oakland
(Joaquin Miller Park). I was over half-way through and feeling great so I
kind of stepped on the gas. On a gradual down-hill I was running quite
fast, and caught a toe on a root or something. Rather than fall, I caught
myself with my left leg hyperextended and heard a crunch. I fell in a
heap, and got up to find my left leg wouldn't take any weight on it at all.
I hobbled out with a tree branch walking stick about 3/4-mile to the next
aid station, and a volunteer drove me to my car and I got myself home.
X-Ray and CT scans confirmed that my left femur slammed into the top of my
left tibia and kind of caved in the roof of my tibia. It's cracked but not
displaced. So no surgery and no cast. I just can't put ANY weight on my
left leg for 6 weeks. Sunday will make it 3 weeks. I think it's been 50
years since the last time I've gone this long without riding a bicycle.
