I had this issue on first gen silver2 thumbies that frayed a shift cable. 
Fixed it by rotating the metal piece between the shifter and mount with the 
stop on it so it prevented the shifter from pinching the cable like Max 
showed. That occurred in 2020-ish I think and hasn't happened in the 4 
years since I fixed it. I can snap a photo of the "fix" if needed.

To answer the question - it's the thumbie mount, not the shifter that is 
the culprit. But it is fixable with the parts you've got and you don't need 
to order new shifter mounts
