If anyone is debating and wants to know available units to determine urgency, you can add 30 or so frames to cart, and Shopify will tell you what they have left in inventory. I did my best to talk up this new frame offer on this blog. Looks like it worked. I'll be awaiting the commission check from Riv ;-)
...and the 57s sold out pronto dente.
I kept an eye on it, from sheer morbid curiosity (and bicycle envy) and the sage ones sold out first. Which I think is the winner but I see the attraction of the butternut color. It's like when the 34x32 jeans sell out first, and it's a surprise every time.
Anyway, cool bikes, and many happy miles to the new owners!

I ordered up a 57cm yellow mustard (.... every time I say that I think of the Beatles "I am the Walrus" song --- " Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye") -- there you go, you can have the same thought I will every time I hope on my new yellow matter custard bike. You're welcome
Anyways - I didn't order up a build kit. I have a bunch of parts I think I'll start with. Ordered some - like Silver crankset and seatpost and other stuff. I'll order a couple things from Soma, like the MKS Question .... I mean ANSWER pedals. I have a set on my trail bike. I like them a smidge more than my GAMAgamas on the RoadUno.
I gotta build a rear wheel, though. Found a super cool hub I think I'll use.
ok. enough stream of conscientiousness. long day. looking forward to folks pics over the next couple of months. cheers

Scored! Wound up going with the mustard color - I have a set of bags from Dill Pickle Gear that should pair nicely with that color (see Drew's "Persnicketyness" thread).
Now it's time to start thinking about a 650b wheel set. I'm pondering a fendered build with 40-45mm slicks.

Lonnie, I'd be interested in your 2009 Sam. Sent you a PM.

I'm almost all the way there to being on board for a Wednesday purchase, but still kicking around the idea of Lime Olive Appaloosa. I think such a dedicated loaded tourer will be overkill for my needs, but they look great. If the new Sam was available in Lime Olive it would be a sealed deal. I'm trying to embrace the Sage, which looks quite baby blue in most pictures. A little beausage should make it a looker, but for $1750 I really don't want to have reservations about the color. I love to minor improvements to this run of Hillbornes. Anyone else weighing a Sam against a Joe?

I'm considering getting one of the 60cm frames, but it would be a pretty frivolous purchase. I currently have a 2009 era canti Sam and a Platypus. I need to get rid of one bike to make space, and I just dont have enough time to ride them both. I haven't been able to decide which one to get rid of for months, and now I'm thinking the new Sam could split the difference slightly and I can sell the two I currently have. BUT that's a lot of horse trading to gain 3mm of tire clearance and...maybe 20mm of chainstay length? I'm not totally sure how much I'd notice the differences, but I'd definitely love the new colors!

That’s what I was thinking when I revisited the photo. Thanks for clarifying Mike. I’ve thought about trying those levers many times, because they look to be ergonomically similar to the Shimano drop-bar levers I use (Tiagra). Anybody out there use them? How do they function?
John It appears the Shimano levers Brent is referring to are only the flat bar levers. The Shimano drop bar levers sold by Riv are still short pull only. I believe the drop bar levers you’re asking about in the photo are Dia Comp (DC 287V). Specifically their long pull levers. Mike On Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 9:32:27 PM UTC-7 John Bokman wrote:
This is news to me. Good to know, thanks!
All the *shimano levers. All the levers they sell now are both short/long pull. You can change where the cable stop lives inside the lever to accommodate any brake. Can anyone tell me what's going on with the mustard bike's brakes? I thought the newsletter said this was "Grant's pick"? Looks like a linear pull brake, but he's got the shimano short pull (Tiagra) levers? Maybe it's a Mini-V?

@Mathias & Dorothy - thanks for the info. I went back to the photo in the newsletter and zoomed in on it. I now see the DT adapters. It's making me giddy...

I spoke to Spencer recently about the downtube shifter bosses vs the slotted braze ons as I wanted to confirm what the 2025 Platys were coming with, and he said one of their framebuilders had told them the downtube shifter bosses are stronger, so their aim is to switch to those for future frame runs.

Let me brighten your day:
Look at the picture again. Those are downtube shifter bosses, with Shimano adapters mounted.
Regarding the bars, this year I built up one of my favorite bikes with some lightweight components pilfered from an early 2000s Trek... and while I noticed nothing wrong about the Bontrager drop bars, coming back to my other bikes with Noodles was a revelation: that little upward bend on the ramps gives a hand rest that just molds into your palm, quite distinct from having your hands forward on the brake hoods.
It's all personal preference, but give Noodles a chance if you haven't yet. It's my all-time favorite and a major money sink for my "cheap" bikes.
BIke/frame/rescue: $0 to $200.
Add B17/Noodle/Tehnomic or better/decent brakes/fenders -- and it pretty much doesn't matter much what you paid for the bike.
And bikes are cheap, as hobbies go. I have friends into motorcycles, flying, vintage guitars... we have it good.

The latest newsletter shows a couple of new Sam's built-up. The mustard one is pretty much how I'd want to do it, too. I hafta admit, though, that I lament the lack of DT shifter mounts. And those drop road bars are a little deeper than I'd prefer. Does anyone know of road bars with a more shallow drop and maybe with drops that are wider than the bend just above them?

Will doesn’t say in the newsletter that it is the Homer mustard. He said it is the Clem mustard from a while ago. When I had two orange Roadinis from 2020 and 2023 one had flake and the later one didn’t, they were also very slightly different oranges.

The color is a pearl metallic mustard that shows through when in direct sunlight. This is my favorite color next to the metallic lime-green. Enlarge the photo and the metallic comes through.
Can anyone tell if the mustard has metallic flakes in it? The photos from the last email update seemed to indicate some sparkles in there, but I’m just not sure if that’s the case or not.
