Hey all. I took the Quickbeam out on some trails in the Marin Headlands this a.m. Here's the link to the Flickr set:
http://tinyurl.com/2do3kwk If you are familiar with the area, the loop covered Coastal Trail, Bobcat Trail, Marincello, Old Springs Trail, Miwok Trail, then Coastal again. I rode it in Nifty Swiftys at 41x19 for 56 freewheeling gear inches. The Niftys worked okay, although if I had had time the night prior, I would have swapped to the Col de la Vies for more tread. I even thought of trying the Hetres at really low PSI, but I didn't want to lose the nimble handling on the QB, which I believed occurred when I tried them out a few weeks ago. I usually ride the Niftys at 70 PSI rear and 65 front, on my normal paved commutes and rides. I went to 55 front and 60 rear. In retrospect, I ought to have tried the rear at 50. I had a hard time with losing traction in a few spots. But overall, I only had to push the QB over about six gravelly steep pitches--about 30 yards total. Other than that, the QB was a delight out there. I really liked the idea of one-speeding those trails, and I seem to have more energy both during and after rides vs. how I feel on a multi-geared bike. In any event, the total mileage was 33.76 from door-to-door. The Garmin Forerunner gave me a total of 7000 feet but that is ludicrous.
