Nope...it's just dirt, water, and your hands. My example is novice
compared to what can be achieved. But really all you do is make a ball
of mud, try to pack it as tight as you can, then you keep dusting it
with dry dirt and wiping it off. It goes from looking like a knappy
suede ball, to velvety, to leather, and the more you do the shinier it
gets. Good ones look like polished marble or glass.

I saw one at a local art gallery, and was completely amazed. Went home
that day to give it a try. Apparently it's a playground activity in
Japan according to the write up in the gallery. I did some research at
home and there is plenty on the interwebz which is where I learned how
to make them.
