That was my Bombadil! It was my second self-supported tour on it, and it performed flawlessly. It was the most breathtaking tour I've ever been on by far...Mt. St. Helens even cleared for a few moments so we could get some pictures from one of the viewpoints. It had been socked in with fog for several days. The most amazing (and difficult!!) part of this tour was the 20 something mile long climb south from Randle, Washington up to the first pass. The road just kept going up and up. We estimated a 5-7 percent average with little or no respite anywhere. Spectacular climbing, quiet roads, beautiful vistas. All picture perfect. You really have to parse out your efforts on a climb like that. One of the other guys (a climber, unlike me) said it best...."you must find your rhythm and climb within yourself". Well said.
This was our fourth tour together, so there were tons of laughs, campfire every night, great times. Did I mention climbing? I think I drank over 200 ounces of water each day. Mike! It was great to meet you and your wife. And thanks for the great directions back to Portland. Made for a beautiful last day. If anyone wants details about the route, campsites, etc, contact me. Happy to share. Absolutely spectacular! Cheers!
