Thicker opaque shrink tubing seems to work. Electronics, hardware or auto
parts stores.

If you crimp down hard with flat pliers on the end of a bit of housing, then
carefully open the metal bits back up by crimping the othe way, you end up
with a flattened end on the piece of plastic tube.  If you've got a tiny
forcep or needle nose, you can usually grab that and coax it out.
