I find that I prefer a narrow chain on a wider cassette spacing when I
am friction shifting. The shifts are still quick and smooth enough.

I have 6 speeds or less on all but one bike, the Rawland. I find that
I need to be much more precise with the 9 sp to keep the casette noise
and rubbing down on the less precise shits by the operator. When I
was switching over to more of the IRD freewhels in the stable I
happened to have a surplus of 9sp chains, so I used them and never
looked back. I tried an 8 series chain once on the freewheels and
have decided to stay with the 9 series Sram chains.
