These are all GREAT stories and ideas... keep em coming, folks... Thanks! Anne, what you did is exactly what I'd love to do virtually anywhere in the US... To board a train to take me to a starting point of my choosing, then to ride to another destination, then complete the trip by train.. To me that's what it should be all about. And it's nice when the box option works, because it sounds like it works rather well.
And while I have no burning desire to actually sit next to my bike on the train,and would be fine with it sitting in a box somewhere, the roll-on/roll-off option certainly requires not so many extra steps, and I hope Amtrak establishes more dedicated bike space like on the Capitol Express.
