Michael, You're on the right track. I have the 26 x 2.0 Extremes, and was pleasantly surprised how nice they are on pavement. They are a tremendous mixed-terrain tire. Duremes and Supremes would also work for commuting duty, but sounds like the Extremes are what you want for an all-rounder. Not too gnarly for pavement, yet fairly capable off- road. I think they are quite amazing, actually.
