Ray - it sounds like you are on to a lost idea. You could write a book on the 
lost art of saving for something.  It could be like a new diet book for 
Euromericans.  

It's funny - when I bought my Hilsen, it was the first thing I saved up for 
probably since I was a kid. I then bought components over the next few months 
as I saved up for them.  I found this method strangely rewarding. I had a bike 
that was slowly transforming before my eyes. As a matter of fact, I'm still 
saving up for stuff to add to or change on it. Next up, dyno hub and light...
