In my rather limited experience, modern Shimano rds are hard to beat for long cage rds. The LX that I swapped out for a 15 year old (at least) XT shifted much better than the XT (but I didn't like the reverse action) and the XT shifts better than the various SunTours that I used. If a modern rd shifts as well as that LX, it will shift wonderfully, even over bastard cassettes made from out-of-series cogs, via Silver bar end shifters.
