I'm thinking bike camping on Catalina might make a nice weekend getaway from
LA, but I've never done any bike camping, S240-style or otherwise. Where to
begin? Recommendations for the neophyte welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Wow... that takes me back to the last century. Probably long enough ago
that everything has changed.

A few of us took our "new" mountain bikes there for a couple nights. There
were permits involved, but it was pretty cool. Rode. Cooked. Camped. Rode
back down to Avalon and the harbor. We packed up the bikes and gear at the
end and were suprised that the ferry was 10 minutes early. Boarded and
stretched out in the sun. It pushed away from the dock and announced we
would be arrived in San Pedro some time in the future.

Of course, we had parked in Long Beach. And had the ferry from that port,
rather than San Pedro. Though we all agreed that it looked curiously
identical to the one we were on as it passed by about 10 minutes later.

Luckily, we had bikes. So the trek to our car just became part of the
story...
