Coming back to a road-y bike (Herse) with multiple speeds and
freewheel after so many years of nuthin'-but-fixed I must say that
having even a 2X5 drivetrain (the Herse has a 42/32 X 13-28 Ultra six,
in fact) is, as the man said in the Four Yorkshiremen sketch,
"Loooxury!". I did an out-and-about ramble today of 22 miles on the
Herse, ending up with a load of about 20 lb to carry up a 1 mile long,
steep hill against a headwind (most of it ridden, I say, in the 32/20
and only bailing to the 32/24 on the last few hundred steepest yards;
avoided the 32/28 altogether!) and I must say that it was a relief to
have lower gears to shift to.

A billion stars go spinning through the night
Blazing high above your head;
But in you is the Presence that will be
When all the stars are dead.
